The Economy of Local Food in Vancouver
From February to June, 2009, VEDC undertook research in conjunction with the Centre for Sustainability and Social Innovation at UBC, to determine the Vancouver region’s potential to strengthen its local food system to help boost local incomes and increase the supply of local food in the local market. The researcher, Chris Hild, under the supervision of Dr. James Tansey, examined the local food system’s strengths, gaps, and looked at best practices and emerging initiatives both here in Vancouver and in other cities considered leaders in local food production. His findings and recommendations are summarized in the report “The Economy of Local Food in Vancouver.”
Due to the fast-evolving nature of this industry, and new projects and companies that are emerging, VEDC will attempt to update the company and project maps on an ongoing basis. An email link will be supplied shortly for new projects or companies to be submitted to the map.
A roundtable discussion of local food industry leaders was held in conjunction with this project. Notes from the session can be found here.
