DELIVERING INDUSTRY-DRIVEN TALENT SOLUTIONS

for Vancouver's Fastest Growing Sectors

The Technology sector within BC has been the fastest growing sector for the last decade. Some 9,700 BC tech companies, in areas ranging from Information Communications Technology and Digital Entertainment to Clean Tech, Life Sciences, and Engineering Services, now call the province home. The Tech sector also employs 86,800 people who, with wages over 60 percent higher than the BC average, earn almost $6.3 billion – more than the mining, oil and gas, and forestry sectors combined.

Demand for Talent is Increasing Faster than Supply

Research into the sector, such as the KMPG Tech Report Card, and vacant job postings show that there’s a significant  shortfall in the right kind and volume of Tech workers to maintain this growth. In fact, BC’s economic forecast for the next 10 years shows that all sectors combined will need over 30 percent more workers to fill anticipated job vacancies. This presents the Tech sector with an ambitious challenge ahead.

“Vancouver’s creative and innovative workforce has attracted many Tech companies to Vancouver, so ensuring that the supply of top talent continues to meet demand is absolutely critical. The Technology Sector Labour Market Partnership is a great step in that direction. The fact that it has been driven by industry leaders, with support from the VEC, means that it will be both impactful and lasting too.  We are happy to be a part of these efforts in order to continue to propel our industry forward and fuel it by developing and attracting the top talent we need.”

The Solution: An Industry-Driven Action Plan born from Collaboration

The Vancouver Economic Commission, with support from the province of British Columbia and other partners including BCTECH and the BC Innovation Council, is now working to ensure the continued vitality of the Tech sector by engaging sector leaders to develop a comprehensive, industry-driven strategy and action plan. The work, as part of the provincial government’s Sector Labour Market Partnerships Program (LMP), is focused on preparing a diverse workforce for these jobs over the long-term, while helping companies meet the pressing need for top talent in the short-term. The plan will benefit BC’s employees and populations looking to build high-growth careers, and BC companies looking to sustain their growth and innovation. It will also help to fuel Vancouver’s economy – already the fastest growing in Canada and a model for green business around the world.
