The Board of the Vancouver Economic Commission, the City’s economic development agency, announced today that Ian McKay will serve as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Ian McKay is a seasoned senior executive with significant leadership and management experience in both the public and private sectors. After working for 14 years in the financial markets in New York, Tokyo and London, he served as the Director of Business Development for ICAP Capital Markets (Canada) Inc, the Senior Policy Advisor to the Federal Minister of Industry, and most recently as the National Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Liberal Party of Canada.

“Ian brings a wealth of experience to the VEC, and has a track record of success in the public and private sector,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson, who serves as the Chair of the Vancouver Economic Commission. “As we implement our Economic Action Strategy and continue to strengthen Vancouver’s economy, Ian will be at the forefront of both supporting local businesses as well as recruiting top talent from around the world to work in Vancouver. We’re pleased to have him on board.”

“Vancouver is developing one of the most diverse and dynamic economies in the world, and is well positioned in a competitive global marketplace to build upon its strengths,” said McKay. “From the exceptional growth of our digital media sector, our world-class medical and tech research companies, or our established natural resource firms, it’s an exciting time to be involved in Vancouver’s economic growth. I look forward to working with the VEC team, all of our stakeholders and the City of Vancouver in order to retain and attract investment to our city.”

Mr McKay will be CEO of the VEC starting September 23. The hiring follows an extensive 4 month search for a new CEO. For more information on the VEC, please visit www.vancouvereconomic.com
