Creative technology is flourishing in Vancouver and BC, and lockdowns resulting from the global pandemic have facilitated an even greater surge in consumption. Whether video games, animated content or changes to live-action film, demand and visibility are growing steadily for creative technology – a sector that has largely thrived behind-the-scenes, but is now taking centre stage. (VEC’s own efforts to enhance the sector provincially and globally include a comprehensive eSports strategy that will establish Vancouver as a global eSports hub, enticing new companies to set up shop and, in turn, creating more job opportunities within the industry.) Below, Brenda Bailey, executive director of DigiBC, discusses the creative industry’s evolution, current challenges and future prospects.

Creative tech has flourished in Canada from its roots in BC, and the sector continues to punch above its weight, showing promise even amid an uncertain economic reality. An already booming industry, video gaming saw an unprecedented surge in consumption with the onset of COVID-19. Similarly, lockdowns and stay-at-home orders have led to a growing demand for animated content, and changes to live-action film are opening new doors for visual effects. Recently, ICTC’s Senior Director of Research & Policy, Alexandra Cutean sat down with Brenda Bailey, Executive Director of DigiBC to learn about this thriving sector.
